Instructions for Citations and References

This guide provides detailed information on in-text citations and the format to be followed in the references section for Ensayos Revista de Economía. Authors are encouraged to review this document before submitting an article for possible publication.

 

In-text citations

If the author’s last name appears in the text, only the date is included in parentheses.

  • There is a study by Del Razo (2003) that estimates…

 

If the work has more than two authors:

  • On the first mention, list all the last names.
    • Atal, Ñopo y Winder (2009) found that…
  • In subsequent mentions, only include the first author’s last name followed by “et al.”
    • Atal et al. (2009)
    •  

If the work has more than six authors, use “et al.” from the first time.

  • Hertz et al. (2008) realized…

 

If the author has more than two works, list the author’s last name and the years of the works separated by a comma.

  • The concept of informal work was introduced by Hart (1971, 1973)…

 

If the author is not included in the sentence, write the last name and date in parentheses:

  • (…) and in most cases, they succeed as entrepreneurs in small-scale family businesses (Cervantes, Gutiérrez y Palacios, 2008).

 

When there are more than two works and if the author is not mentioned in the text, separate the references with semicolons.

  • (…) which have failed to integrate into the legal and structured economic dynamics. (De Soto, 2000; Shneider, 2004).
  • (…) in the international context (Taylor, 1996; Marcouiller, De Castilla y Woodruff, 1997; Le, 1999; Charmes, 2000; Parker, 2004; Van Der Sluis, Van Praag y Vijverberg, 2004; Huesca, 2005, 2008; Cervantes et al., 2008).

 

If the works are from an institution, cite the institution’s acronym followed by the year.

  • (…) as well as by the International Labour Organization (ILO, 1972).

 

If AUTHOR A’s work is cited by AUTHOR B and you did not read the original work, list AUTHOR B’s reference in the reference section.

  • In the sense of AUTHOR A (cited in AUTHOR B, 2012)…

 

References section

A reference list includes only the sources that support the research and that were used in preparing the paper.

General considerations

  • The references are listed in alphabetical order based on the first letter of the reference.
  • The works by the same author are ordered chronologically.

Electronic documents

  • The database name where the article was found is not included, except for theses and e-books.
  • The date the article was retrieved is not included.
  • Do not write dot (.) after the Web address (URL).

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

  • Unique alphanumeric series assigned by the publisher to a document in electronic format.
  • Identifies content.
  • Provides a consistent link for locating it on the Internet.
  • Currently, not all documents have a DOI; but if available, it should be included as part of the reference.

Basic format: Printed publication

Basic format: Newspaper article without an author

Alphabetize the work without an author by the first significant word in the title. In the text, use a title for the citation in parentheses (“Amaga Irán”, 2006), include the date in parentheses, italicize the name of the newspaper, and precede the page numbers for the newspaper articles with p. or pp., followed by the newspaper section.

  • The Iranian parliament threatened the UN Secretary-General yesterday. (2006, May 8). El Norte, p. A24.
